DePuy Orthopedics—a unit of Johnson & Johnson—instituted a total recall of two of its products on August 24, 2010:

  • ASRTM XL Acetabular System (hip implant)
  • ASRTM Hip Resurfacing System

The ASRTM XL Acetabular System has been in use since 2004. Patients using these products, however, were shown to have a higher need of follow-up surgery. Data showed that 1 in 8 patients whose surgeries involved these hip implant products would need a revision.

Studies Showing Higher Revision Rates for DePuy Hip Implant Products

This recall took place in response to studies showing dangerous side effects related to the products. The National Joint Registry of England & Wales found that revision rates were higher for surgeries using these products at the five-year point. For the ASRTM XL Acetabular System, the five-year revision rate was 12%. For the ASRTM Hip Resurfacing System, the revision rate was about 13% at five years. Factors that appeared to equate the highest revision rates included ASRTM head sizes below 50 mm in diameter and patients who were female.

Symptoms of Complications with DePuy Products:

Symptoms related to the reported problems with the hip implants are as follows:

  • Pain and swelling
  • Clicking
  • Problems walking
  • Loosening (when the implant does not stay attached to the bone)
  • Fracture
  • Dislocation

If you have had a hip replacement and received an ASRTM XL Acetabular System (hip implant) or ASRTM Hip Resurfacing System, it is important to be aware of the ongoing litigation surrounding these products.
