Australia Recalls Essure After Years of Reports of Medical Problems

September 5, 2017 · FLEMING | NOLEN | JEZ, L.L.P.

Following years of reports of medical problems, chronic pain, and unintended pregnancies, Australia has issued a recall of the Essure permanent birth control system.

Australasian Medical and Scientific LTD and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) issued a ‘hazard alert’ on Wednesday, August 30 for the device which permanently blocks the fallopian tubes in order to prevent pregnancies. The statement warned consumers and doctors that no more Essure devices would be implanted in the country, and that all unused devices would be recalled.

In the statement, the TGA said that some patients,

“may not have been fully informed of the possible device and procedure-related risks before choosing to have Essure implanted… Some of these reports [of serious complications] were considered serious and resulted in removal of the device, which involved abdominal surgery.”

The reported complications include immune, hypersensitivity, or allergy-type reactions, migration and perforation of the device, chronic pain, unintended pregnancy, and changes in menstrual bleeding.

According to the TGA, Conceptus Inc. the manufacturer of Essure and a subsidiary of Bayer AG informed the administration of its decision to halt the distribution of its product on May 31 for what they said were “business reasons”.

If you are suffering from complications caused by Essure, you may be able to file a lawsuit to secure compensation for any damages you may have incurred.
