When individuals have an issue with their hip and a replacement is recommended, the patient has the right to expect the replacement to be safe and free of problems. One of the most recognizable names in hip replacements is Stryker Corporation. They manufacture multiple types of implants and replacement systems. In 2012, they voluntarily recalled two of their hip implants. This has sparked a number of lawsuits from patients who had been harmed by these hip replacements.
The recall was issued after their Rejuvenate Modular and ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Stems products were found to be associated with various health hazards in patients who had received the implants. The hip replacements may fail and break down, leading to metallic debris in the bone or loss of bone around the replacement. This can lead to serious health issues.
One of the issues that can arise because of a faulty hip replacement is metallosis. This is a situation in which metallic debris begins to build up in the body’s soft tissues. When this happens around the hip, it can cause the tissue to die and patients can experience joint pain, deterioration of the bone, cysts, or the failure or loosening of the implant. This could also result in cognitive problems and trouble with the nervous system if metal ions spread to the bloodstream.
This is probably the most common long-term problem with defective hip replacements. The body can sometimes reject the hip replacement as it would any other foreign object. When this happens, the body attempts to clean up debris by releasing cellular reactions into the hip, which can lead to chronic inflammation and bone loss around the hip. This is the cause of up to 75% of all hip replacement implant failures.
