Dangers of Thanksgiving & Holiday Traffic

November 25, 2015 · FLEMING | NOLEN | JEZ, L.L.P.

With Thanksgiving and numerous other holidays coming up, it’s easy to understand that there will be a number of vehicles on the road. This doesn’t just include small passenger vehicles, though. It could also include large semi-trucks and 18-wheelers that are needed to deliver goods to stores all over the country. With so many trucks on the road and tight deadlines to make, it is entirely possible that accidents may occur.

At Fleming | Nolen | Jez, L.L.P., our truck accident lawyers understand the various dangers associated with these very large trucks and what can happen if an accident occurs. Due to the size alone, any accident involving a truck can result in serious injuries. When you factor in the strict delivery deadlines for the trucks, it becomes a much more pressing matter. It is important to keep these dangers in mind if you plan on traveling during the holidays so you can be prepared.

Trucks Take Longer to Stop

If you are on the road and a large truck is behind you — especially one with full cargo — remember that it is much more difficult for them to stop their vehicle. Because of this, you should avoid making sudden stops as much as possible. This includes giving the vehicle in front of you enough time to stop without having to slam on your own breaks.

Trucks Make Wide Turns

We know that people are in a hurry. It’s the holidays and you’re trying to reach your destination as soon as possible. You still must be cautious and aware of the dangers regarding turning with a truck. These large trucks have to take wide angles and if a vehicle were to try and pass it through the turn, it could result in a serious accident.

Trucks May Have Uneven Loads

It is the responsibility of the cargo loader to make sure that the trucks trailer is loaded properly and that the cargo is even and within weight limits. If the cargo is uneven or overloaded, simple turns could cause the truck to tip and turn over on its side. As a driver, you should be aware of this and make sure you travel a safe distance from these trucks so you are not within the area around it.

Car Accidents vs. Truck Accidents

With Christmas orders going out all over the country, trucks are moving constantly in order to make deliveries. This means more and more of these large vehicles are on the road. While an accident with a car can be dangerous, the size and weight of trucks increases the risk of lifelong injuries. Whether it is an underride accident, jackknife, or rollover accident, these can all be serious situations.

We are well aware that traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday—as well as other holidays this time of year—can be stressful. Combined with the potential dangers on the road and it is downright daunting. If you or someone you love has been injured in a trucking accident, contact Fleming | Nolen | Jez, L.L.P.
