With Brazil’s announcement to withdraw the Essure® device from its market, making it the first country to officially partake in this decidedly bold move to suspend its commercialization, France is now discussing its own stance on the controversial non-surgical and permanent contraceptive system. At least 120,000 women in France use the device, but some women have already taken a stance against it, filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer, Bayer.
Brazil’s Anvisa classified Essure® as “maximum risk”, given its long list of severe side effects and the potentially permanent injuries it may inflict on patients who receive it. According to the technical-scientific report they received, the device’s metal coil, which are implanted into the fallopian tubes to clog them and prevent sperm from reaching the eggs, causes changes in menstrual cycles, chronic pain, perforation, device migration, and may lead to unwanted pregnancies.
This movement against Essure® is not restricted to just a couple of countries. Worldwide, over 900,000 women use this device and thousands have come forward to shed light on its terrible effects. In the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a boxed warning, informing consumers of the dangers of Essure®. Thousands of women have reported complaints after suffering from a host of serious side effects. In addition to the effects noted above, Essure® may also cause:
- Life-threatening ectopic pregnancy
- Fetal death
- Allergic reactions to the device
- Additional surgeries, such as a hysterectomy
- Rashes, hair loss, and other autoimmune responses
