It has been eight years of recalls and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is still trying to help fix the situation. Now, after the tenth known death, the organization has announced that there will be another recall, this time taking five million vehicles with Takata airbag inflators off the road. First investigated in 2009, the defective airbag inflator combines a chemically volatile propellant with low-quality manufacturing.
As a result of the faulty design and low standards, multiple individuals have died, including the most recent, a 52-year-old South Carolina man. After an accident on December 22 in which he struck a cow in the road, Joel Knight’s airbag deployed in his 2006 Ford Ranger. The airbag, which had the Takata smokeless driver inflator, deployed with such force that Knight’s spinal cord had been severed by a large metal shard.
To be successful in a product liability case, at least one of the following must be shown: a defect in manufacturing, a defect in design, and / or a failure to warn. Takata airbag inflators have been under scrutiny for eight years now, with countless recalls having already occurred. The manufacturer should be held accountable for the injuries that have been sustained as a result of their defective product.
