Truvada is a medication prescribed in conjunction with other drugs to control the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).  Truvada is a mixture of emtricitabine and tenofovir and works by decreasing the level of virus present in the body. Truvada may also be used to prevent HIV exposure and is referred to as PREP when used for this indication. Gilead Sciences Inc. originally developed it under the brand name Viread, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, or TDF. Gilead sells five different

TDF brand names drugs in the United States, and the drug also comes in generic form.

The product contains warnings that the following may occur when using Truvada: serious side effects including kidney damage/failure, a decrease in bone density and mineralization, and bone fractures.

Gilead Sciences Inc. has been accused of manipulating the patent system by withholding from patients a more potent, less toxic drug called TAF, tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF).

The new HIV meds containing tenofovir alafenamide fumarate, or TAF, work at a fraction of the dose of the last-gen product Viread, a TDF,  and significantly cuts down on side effects.

Filed lawsuits against Gilead claim that it held back newer and safer drugs to protect its older franchise.  Because of Gilead’s strategy encouraging the use of its older drug which had higher doses of TDF than the newer products do, patients needlessly developed kidney and bone problems.
