small planeOn July 21, 2016, a small plane crashed in a Northern Illinois residential neighborhood just south of Chicago [1]resulting in one death and a house fire. Reports started coming in early Thursday morning and crews from the Joliet Police department were on scene to begin their investigation of the matter.

The exact number of passengers was not immediately known, but the Joliet City Manager believed that the individual killed in the crash was the pilot. The manager also stated while it was an unfortunate accident, it was fortunate that no other injuries occurred due to the crash.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration announced that the agency had a team sent to the site of the crash in order to determine the type of aircraft involved, as well as gather any information that could help with their investigation. This information will be passed to the National Transportation Safety Board, which led the investigation to determine cause of the crash. The exact cause of the crash is still unknown.

The crash resulted in the side of one home burning and left parts from the plane scattered throughout the street. The Joliet Deputy Fire Chief believes that the fire started due to a ruptured fuel tank when the plane crashed.

It wasn’t immediately known where the plane was flying from or to, but the closest airports to the crash site are the Clow Airport in Bolingbrook and the Joliet Municipal Airport. The crash occurred in Plainfield.
