In recent months, the FDA has made the possible side effects of Bayer’s Essure contraceptive a top priority. The issue has drawn interest from Congress, as well as patients who have sustained injuries from the birth control device. The FDA held a recent public meeting in order to discuss the safety issues associated with Essure and an update on its evaluation has been issued. According to the update, the agency is reviewing information that it has received recently as well as medical reports.
The update also states that the attention is on the concerns from public speakers and other feedback. The agency called this a high-priority issue. They concluded:
“We are working expeditiously to conduct an evidence-based review of the available information and identify appropriate next steps. We anticipate communicating our actions publicly at the end of February 2016.”
